The german composer Carl Orff composed the famouses “Cantiones Profanae” in 1937, inspired by the original medieval textes. Orff choose to write a new melody, even though in the original manuscript there was a track for some textes. The first exibition took place in Frankfurt am Mein the 8thjune 1937, and the first itailian concert was in the “Teatro della Scala” in Milano the 10th october 1942.
Orff was inspired by the Clerici Vagantes’ song wich hymns to the wine, the joy of living, student and carnival’s song, due to the wine, drinked in large ammounts, but at the same time the theme of the death still remain. The german composer was also inspirated by the tongue, very rich because it was written and singed in ancient german and a “vulgar” latin (more popular that the original latin); for this peculiarity, the Clerici Vagantes, could be called “ stage song” .
The composition is steadied and marked by regular rythms, choruses in unison, and percussions wich defines the mentioned “stage song”.
After the prologue, an opening invocation to the goddes Fortune (O Fortuna, the most famous song of the concert), we will hear the other three parts: the first is Veris Latea Facies, a celebretion of the spring, wich describe the earthly side of this season with melancholy emotions. The second part, called “In Taberna”, student’s song dominate. The third part called Cour d’amours wich is an invocation to Venus, is the suite of the first part and finish the emblematic cycle of the opera.
